When a document is required for use in a foreign country, officials need the ability to authenticate or certify the validity of the document. Legalization/Authentication/Apostille are the methods of authenticating documents for use in a foreign country. The terms and requirements are a result of the Hague Convention on Certifying the Authenticity of Foreign Documents.
The method of certification used depends on whether the country has agreed to accept the Apostille (French for Certification) as the form of certification. If they have not, the documents are legalized or authenticated in a process that requires multiple steps.
